It’s transaction season, ladies and gentlemen.

On Monday afternoon, the Blue Jays made a handful of moves. The players on the 60-day Injured List (Alek Manoah, Jordan Romano, Daulton Varsho, and Will Wagner) were activated, while Génesis Cabrera was shockingly waived and elected free agency, as did Luis Frías. Moreover, the Jays claimed righty Michael Petersen off waivers, while Luis De Los Santos was claimed by the New York Mets. Emmanuel Ramírez was also designated for assignment.

Starting with the most shocking roster move, the Blue Jays outrighted Génesis Cabrera, with the lefty electing free agency. Last season, the 28-year-old lefty was one of the best relievers in the Blue Jays bullpen as he finished the year with a 3.59 ERA and a 5.13 FIP in 62.2 innings pitched. <a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/10/projected-arbitration-salaries-for-2025.html">According to MLB Trade Rumours</a>, he was expected to make $2.5 million in his final season of arbitration.
Luis Frías being waived is a little less shocking, as he gave up eight earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched while with the Jays. Last season for the National League pennant-winning Arizona Diamondbacks, Frías had a 4.06 ERA and a 4.67 FIP in 31 innings pitched, paired with a 1.35 ERA in 6.2 innings in the postseason.
Like Frías, Emmanuel Ramírez was one of many pitchers that the Blue Jays claimed off waivers throughout the season. The 30-year-old didn’t pitch for Toronto but gave up four earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched. In the big leagues with the Miami Marlins, he had a 6.97 ERA and a 4.62 FIP in 20.2 innings pitched in 2024.
Speaking of the Marlins, the Blue Jays claimed another reliever from the 62-100 team, as Michael Petersen joined Ramírez and Brett de Geus off the waiver wire. In 19.2 innings pitched between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Marlins, the 30-year-old had a 5.95 ERA and a 5.56 FIP in 19.2 innings pitched.
Luis De Los Santos was signed the same day Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the summer of 2015. They were the two longest-serving Blue Jays in the organization and the last two players remaining that were signed during Alex Anthopoulos’ tenure. Last season with Buffalo, he had a slash line of .260/.375/.441 with six home runs in 154 plate appearances. With Toronto, he slashed .172/.226/.241 in 31 plate appearances.
As for Alek Manoah, he underwent Tommy John surgery and should be ready at some point next season, likely late in the summer. Will Wagner had knee surgery but should be ready before Spring Training, while Daulton Varsho had shoulder surgery and should also be ready before Spring Training. Jordan Romano had an elbow injury that required surgery, but he was progressing in September and should hopefully be ready in spring.
